My Thanksgiving Morning 2007

On this thanksgiving 2007 I went out early morning to enjoy and photograph a glorious fall day in Philadelphia.
First I went to the historic area and found several compositions worthy of shooting. But a restlessness and yearning led me to go to an area of the city that I am very familiar with from childhood, and that I have photographed before. It is a place for those who grew up in South Philly known as League Island or more locally, “The Lakes”.
As children it is where our families picnicked, where our fathers and uncles took us to play ball and fish; and as teenagers where we would park and make out with our girlfriends. And during college I even had a part time summer job there as a teacher at a summer camp.

While driving down broad street and passing so many familiar places, I started to reminisce about my family’s holiday dinners. I remembered that one year as a casual project I photographed my aunts preparing the meal. I look forward to looking at these photographs again and seeing those whom I love and that are no longer here except in my heart and mind.
When I arrived down the lakes I saw everything I remembered doing. Some people were playing ball and others were fishing. Some were jogging and others walking their dogs. And yet some others were just laying back and enjoying the colors of autumn.

I know and love the lakes. I have countless happy memories there, and this morning I was doing what I love and do best, photographing it. It was the ideal way to give thanks to, and remember those who gave so much to me.

This coming series is dedicated to those whom I have shared so many wonderful holidays.
